Elisha Levy's Football Journey
Playing Career
Elisha Levy was born in Jerusalem, Israel. When he was a young boy in the early 1960s, his family moved to Beit She'an, Israel. At just 11 years old, he joined the children's football club Hapoel Beit She'an.
He played for Hapoel Beit She'an as he grew up. In 1974, he started playing for their main team. Levy played for Beit She'an for eight years, first in the third division and then in the second division. After that, he moved to a top-division team called Maccabi Haifa.
In the 1982–83 season, Levy was the captain for Maccabi Haifa. His team made it to the semi-finals of the Israel State Cup. After a change in coaches, Levy moved to Maccabi Petah Tikva.
He played for Petah Tikva for four seasons. Then, he decided to go back to his first club, Hapoel Beit She'an. He played there for two more seasons before he stopped playing football professionally. Soon after, he became the head coach of the team.
Coaching Career
Elisha Levy coached Hapoel Beit She'an for six years in his first time as manager. In the 1992–93 season, he helped them get promoted to the second division. The next year, he made history when Beit She'an moved up to the Liga Leumit, which was the top football league at that time.
In the 1995–96 season, he managed Maccabi Herzliya. However, he was let go after the season started poorly. The next year, he coached Tzafririm Holon.
Levy returned to Hapoel Beit She'an for a second time in the 1997–98 season. That season is remembered for a game known as the Shoelaces game. This game was very important for the league title.
Two years later, Levy became the coach of Ironi Rishon LeZion in the 1998–99 season. He led the team to finish in 6th place, which was their best finish ever. He continued coaching Rishon until 2001. A couple of weeks later, he became the new coach for Hapoel Kfar Saba. Even though he led them to some impressive wins, he could not save Kfar Saba from moving down a league.
In the 2001–02 season, Levy managed F.C. Ashdod. He helped them reach 4th place, which earned them a spot in the Intertoto Cup. That year, his team also made it to the final of the Toto Cup, but they lost to Hapoel Tel Aviv. He left Ashdod during the 2003–04 season.
He went back to Hapoel Kfar Saba in 2005, when they were in the second league. He helped them get promoted back to the top league. He resigned during the next season when Kfar Saba was in last place.
In 2006–07, he managed Bnei Sakhnin and helped them get promoted to the Israeli Premier League. In the 2007–08 season, Levy and Sakhnin finished in a record 4th place. This meant they could play in the Intertoto Cup.
On April 2, 2008, it was announced that Levy would be the next manager for Maccabi Haifa. He signed a one-year contract and replaced Ronny Levy. He led Maccabi Haifa to win the Israeli championship in the 2008–09 season, and they won it again two years later in 2010–11.
On May 23, 2018, Elisha Levy signed to coach the Israeli Premier League club Maccabi Petah Tikva F.C.. Since then, he has also managed the Israel national team, Hapoel Kfar Saba, Hapoel Haifa, and is currently with Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv.
