The Israeli Premier League (Hebrew: ליגת העל, Ligat HaAl, meaning The Super League) is the top professional association football (soccer) league in Israel. It is the highest level of soccer in the Israeli football league. There are 14 teams in the league. Teams can move up or down between this league and the second division, Liga Leumit.

Seasons usually run from August to May. Each team plays between 33 and 36 matches. In total, 240 matches are played every season. The league started in 1999. This happened after the Israel Football Association decided to create a new league. The Israeli Premier League is also ranked 15th in Europe. This ranking is based on how well its teams do in European competitions.

Since 1932, 15 different clubs have won the title of Israeli Football League champions. Since the Israeli Premier League began in 1999, six clubs have won the championship: Beitar Jerusalem (twice), Hapoel Be'er Sheva (three times), Hapoel Tel Aviv (twice), Maccabi Haifa (ten times), Maccabi Tel Aviv (seven times), and Ironi Kiryat Shmona (once). The current champions are Maccabi Tel Aviv. They won the 2023–24 season.

How the League Works

The Israeli Premier League was created in 1999. It took the place of the old top league, Liga Leumit. The Israel Football Association changed the leagues to make the competition better. In its first season, there were 14 clubs. These included the top 13 teams from the 1998–99 season. Also, the best team from the third division joined. That season, three clubs moved down to a lower league. One team from Liga Leumit moved up.

Teams and Matches

There are 14 clubs in the league. At the end of each season, the two teams with the fewest points move down to Liga Leumit. In their place, the two best teams from Liga Leumit move up. The league changed from 16 to 14 clubs for the 2012–13 season. This was part of new rules from the IFA.

First, all the teams play each other twice. This is called a round-robin schedule. This means each team plays 26 matches.

After these matches, the top six teams play in a special championship playoff. In this playoff, they play each other twice more. The team that finishes first in this playoff wins the Israeli championship. This team then gets to play in the UEFA Champions League. The teams that finish second and third qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The team that wins the Israeli State Cup also gets to play in the UEFA Europa League. If the State Cup winner is already one of the top three teams in the league, then the fourth-placed team in the league will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League. If the State Cup winner also wins the Israeli Premier League, then the second-placed team in the league will play in the UEFA Europa League.

The bottom eight teams also play each other once. This is to avoid being one of the two teams that move down to a lower league.

Clubs in the League

A total of 31 clubs have played in the Israeli Premier League. This includes all seasons from 1999 until the start of the 2024–25 season. You can find a list of winners and top scorers in the List of Israeli football champions.

Three clubs have been in the Israeli Premier League every season since it started. These are Beitar Jerusalem, Maccabi Haifa, and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

League Sponsors

The Israeli Premier League has had sponsors over the years. These sponsors often get to name the league. Here is a list of past sponsors and what they called the competition:

  • 1999–2002: Pelephone (a mobile phone company) – Ligat Pelephone
  • 2005–2010: Toto Winner Organization (the Israeli Sports Betting Board) – Ligat Toto
  • 2010–2016: Toto Winner Organization – Ligat Winner
  • 2016–2018: Toto Winner Organization – Ligat Ha'al
  • 2018–2019: Japanika (an Asian restaurant) – Ligat Japanika
  • 2019–2022: Tel Aviv Stock Exchange – Ligat Habursa Leniyarot Erech
  • 2022–2024: ONE ZERO (a Digital Bank) – Ligat ONE ZERO

Foreign Players

Teams can have up to six foreign players. Some players do not count towards this limit. For example, Druze players from the Golan and players who have played in the league for six years in a row are exempt. Also, Jewish players and those married to Israelis are not counted. This is because they can get Israeli citizenship.

Watching the Games

Television

Israeli Premier League games are shown live on Sport 1, Sport 1 HD, and Sport 2 channels. The main match of the week is shown on Sport 5 and Channel 1 HD network television. There is also a show on Saturday nights on Sport 5 that reviews the league.

Outside Israel, games are broadcast in Hebrew by The Israeli Network. They show matches in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Costa Rica, and Europe. In the United Kingdom, William Hill broadcasts live matches with English commentary on their online service, William Hill TV.

Radio and Internet

Radio Tel Aviv has had the radio rights since 2011. They broadcast alongside other radio stations like Radio Haifa and Radio Galei Zahal. Their show is called Saturday of Football. It is also shown live on ONE TV channel.

The main match of the week can be watched on the Channel 1 website. Since 2010, game summaries are available online. You can find them on Ynet, ONE, and Sport 5.

Mobile Phones

Since 2012, ONE owns the rights to broadcast games on mobile phones. Before that, Sport 5 had these rights.

Team Money

Clubs get money from several places:

  • Selling rights to broadcast their games.
  • Selling tickets to matches.
  • Selling team merchandise (like jerseys).
  • From Toto Winner, the Israeli Sports Betting Council.
  • From sponsors.

Israeli Premier League Champions (1999–Present)

Maccabi
Maccabi Tel Aviv celebrating their league winners title at the end of the 2012–13 season

When the Israeli Premier League became the top division in 1999–2000, Liga Leumit became the second division. Since then, only six clubs have won the title. These are Hapoel Tel Aviv, Ironi Kiryat Shmona, Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Beitar Jerusalem, and Hapoel Be'er Sheva. Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Beitar Jerusalem are often called the "Big Four" of Israeli football.

Maccabi Haifa is the most successful club in this period. They have won nine titles in 23 seasons. Maccabi Tel Aviv has won six titles. Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Tel Aviv have each won two championships. Hapoel Tel Aviv won the league in 1999–2000 and again in 2009–10. They also won the "double" (league and cup) in both those seasons. Beitar Jerusalem also achieved this in 2007–08.

Ironi Kiryat Shmona won their first championship in the 2011–12 season. They were the first team from northern Israel to win the title. Maccabi Tel Aviv then won three titles in a row. This included a Treble (winning three major trophies) in 2014–15.

It's interesting that three of the "Big Four" teams have been near the bottom of the table at some point. Hapoel Tel Aviv is the only one that has been moved down to a lower league.
