Walid Badir (born on March 12, 1974) is a famous Israeli former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder, which is a player who helps both attack and defense.
Walid Badir won many important titles during his career. He won four league championships with Maccabi Haifa. Later, he joined Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2005. He became the captain of Hapoel Tel Aviv and helped them win another league title. He retired from playing football in 2013. In 1999, Walid Badir moved to England to play for Wimbledon. He scored one goal in a league game against Manchester United at their home stadium, Old Trafford. However, he only played in 21 games for Wimbledon before returning to Israel.
Success with Maccabi Haifa
Walid Badir came back to Israel in 2000 and joined Maccabi Haifa. This was at the start of a successful period for the club under coach Avram Grant. With Walid as part of the team, Maccabi Haifa won four league championships. They were very strong, only missing out on the title once in 2002–03.
Becoming a Leader at Hapoel Tel Aviv
In 2005, Walid Badir signed with Hapoel Tel Aviv. He quickly became a key player for them. In the 2005–06 season, Hapoel Tel Aviv finished second in the league and won the State Cup. Walid was given the important role of team captain and kept this role until he retired.
On August 26, 2013, Walid Badir played his last game for Hapoel Tel Aviv at Bloomfield Stadium. The club and its fans gave him a big standing ovation to thank him for his amazing career.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Walid Badir started coaching. On November 17, 2012, he was appointed as a caretaker manager for Hapoel Tel Aviv. He later became an assistant manager for the club.
Playing for the National Team
Walid Badir played 74 games for the Israel national team. He scored 12 goals for his country. His first game for Israel was on August 5, 1997, in a friendly match against Belarus.
One of his most memorable goals was in a 2006 World Cup qualifying match against France. He scored in the 83rd minute, helping Israel get a draw against the strong French team.
