Elizabeth is a neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. It got its name from Elizabeth College. This was a small college for women that started in 1897. Today, Presbyterian Hospital stands where the college once was.

The Elizabeth community began in 1891. This was when a streetcar line was built to the area. This made Elizabeth the second oldest "streetcar suburb" in Charlotte. A streetcar suburb is a neighborhood that grew because people could easily travel there by streetcar. Elizabeth grew quickly after 1902 when a trolley line was finished. The city officially added Elizabeth to its boundaries in 1907.

Elizabeth was once one of the most popular places to live in Charlotte. It is home to Independence Park. This was the very first public park in the city. In 2006, about 3,908 people lived in Elizabeth.

Exploring Elizabeth: What Makes It Special?

Elizabeth is known for its beautiful, tree-lined streets. Many of the trees are very old. They form a leafy "canopy" over the roads. This makes the neighborhood feel very green and shady.

Easy to Walk Around

Elizabeth is also a great place for walking. Most of its roads have sidewalks. Businesses and homes are close to each other. This means you can often walk to shops or restaurants. Elizabeth has a "Walk Score" of 72. This is much higher than Charlotte's average Walk Score of 34. A higher score means it's easier to walk around.

Where is Elizabeth Located?

The Elizabeth neighborhood has clear borders. To the southwest, it's bordered by Randolph Road and 4th Street. Independence Boulevard is to the west and north. A small creek forms the border to the east. The main roads that go through Elizabeth are Elizabeth Avenue and 7th Street.
