Elizabeth Ann Nalley, also known as Ann Nalley, is a well-known American chemist. She is a professor of chemistry at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. She has made important contributions to the field of chemistry and has held leadership roles in major scientific organizations.

Early Life and Education

Ann Nalley was born in July 1942, in Catron, Missouri. She loved learning and pursued a strong education in science. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in chemical education, from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, in 1965.

She continued her studies, getting a Master of Science (M.S.) in analytical chemistry from Oklahoma State University in 1969. Later, she earned her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in radiation chemistry from Texas Woman's University in 1975.

Teaching Career

Dr. Nalley's teaching career began even before she finished college. From 1964 to 1965, she taught chemistry at Muskogee Central High School. This early experience showed her passion for sharing scientific knowledge.

In 1969, she joined the faculty at Cameron University. She started as an instructor and quickly moved up. By 1978, she became a full professor. She was the very first woman to achieve the rank of full professor at Cameron University, which was a big step!

Leadership and Awards

Beyond her teaching, Dr. Nalley has been a leader in many scientific groups. For 21 years, she served on the board of directors for Phi Kappa Phi. This is an honor society that recognizes excellent students and scholars. She was even the president of Phi Kappa Phi from 1995 to 1998.

In 2005, she received the Iota Sigma Pi Award in Professional Excellence. This award honors women who have shown outstanding work in chemistry.

One of her most important roles was serving as president of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2006. The ACS is one of the world's largest scientific organizations. Leading it showed her influence and respect within the chemistry community.

In 2015, Dr. Nalley received another special award from the ACS: the ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences. This award recognized her efforts to inspire and support young women to pursue careers in chemistry. Her work has helped many students, especially girls, find their path in science.
