The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House in Tenafly, New Jersey, is a very important place. It was the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton from 1868 to 1887. These were her busiest years working for women's rights. She had lived in other places before, like Seneca Falls, New York and Boston, Massachusetts. This house is special because of all the important work she did there.

History of the Stanton House

The house was built in 1868. It was close to the Tenafly train station. Elizabeth Cady Stanton lived here for almost 20 years. She used money from her speeches and writings to take care of the house.

Stanton's Work for Women's Rights

During her time in Tenafly, Stanton worked hard for women's rights. Her good friend, Susan B. Anthony, often visited the house. Together, they wrote a huge three-volume book. It was called the History of Woman Suffrage. This book helped tell the story of the fight for women's right to vote.

In 1880, while living in this house, Stanton tried to vote. But she was not allowed to. This showed how much work still needed to be done. One of Stanton's daughters even got married on the house's lawn. Stanton sold the house after her husband passed away.

A National Historic Landmark

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House in Tenafly became a National Historic Landmark in 1975. This means it is a very important place in American history. Her other home in Seneca Falls, New York, became a landmark even earlier, in 1965. The house is still privately owned today.

About the House's Design

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House is quite large. It has seven bedrooms, which is a lot of space! It also has six fireplaces to keep it warm. The ceilings inside are very high, about ten feet tall.

Architectural Style

The house was built in a style called Second Empire. This style often features a special type of roof called a mansard roof. It also has parts that look like Colonial Revival and Victorian Mansard designs. A big porch, called a portico, was added to the house later. This happened after Stanton no longer owned it.
