Elizabeth Greville, Countess of Warwick (born August 22, 1720 – died February 24, 1800) was an important figure in British nobility. She was born Elizabeth Hamilton. She became the wife of Francis Greville, 1st Earl of Warwick. He was given the title of Earl of Warwick by King George III of the United Kingdom in 1760.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Lord Archibald Hamilton and his second wife, Jane Hamilton.
Becoming a Countess
Elizabeth married Francis Greville on May 15, 1742. At that time, he did not yet have the title of Earl. Their wedding took place at Park Place in Remenham, Berkshire.
In 1727, Francis inherited the title of Baron Brooke. He also inherited Warwick Castle, a famous historic building. Later, in 1746, he was given the title of Earl Brooke. When he became an Earl, Elizabeth also became a Countess.
Family Life
Elizabeth and Francis Greville had eight children together. Their children were:
- Lady Louisa Augusta Greville (1743–c.1779), who married William Churchill and had children.
- Lady Frances Elizabeth Greville (1744–1825), who married Sir Henry Harpur, 6th Baronet, and had children.
- Lady Charlotte Mary Greville (c.1745–1763), who married John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway, and had children.
- George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1746–1816), who later inherited his father's titles.
- Lady Isabella Greville, who sadly passed away when she was young.
- Hon. Charles Francis Greville (1749–1809), who never married.
- Hon. Robert Fulke Greville (1751–1824), who married Louisa Cathcart, Countess of Mansfield, and had children.
- Lady Anne Greville (1760–1783).
After her husband, the Earl, passed away in 1773, Elizabeth married General Robert Clerk.
Elizabeth Greville lived to be almost 80 years old. She passed away at her home in Dover Street, London, on February 24, 1800.
