John Stewart, the 7th Earl of Galloway, was an important British nobleman and politician. He was born on 13 March 1736 and passed away on 13 November 1806. Before becoming the Earl of Galloway in 1773, he was known as Viscount Garlies from 1747. He also served as a Member of Parliament from 1761 to 1773.

Early Life and Family Background

John Stewart was the oldest son and second child of Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway. His mother was Lady Catherine Cochrane, who was Alexander's second wife.

John had several siblings. His older sister, Lady Susanna Stewart, married a very important person, Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. His younger brother, Admiral the Honourable Keith Stewart, became a naval admiral. Other sisters included Lady Margaret, Lady Charlotte, Lady Catherine, and Lady Harriet.

His grandparents on his father's side were James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway, and Catherine Montgomerie. His mother's father was John Cochrane, the 4th Earl of Dundonald.

His Political Career

John Stewart was a member of the Tory political party. He held several important positions during his life.

From 1761 to 1773, he was a Member of Parliament, representing areas like Morpeth and Ludgershall. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

After his father passed away in 1773, John became the 7th Earl of Galloway. The next year, in 1774, he was chosen as a representative peer for Scotland. This allowed him to sit in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament, until the 1790s.

He was also a Lord of the Bedchamber for King George III from 1783 until his death. This was an important role in the King's household. In 1775, he was made a Knight of the Thistle, which is a very special honor in Scotland.

Art and Public Image

John Stewart was interested in art. A famous artist named Anton Raphael Mengs painted his portrait in 1758 when he was still Viscount Garlies. This painting is now in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

His second wife, Anne Dashwood, also had her portrait painted by a famous artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds, in 1764. This painting can be seen at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Another artist, Angelica Kauffmann, painted Lady Galloway with their daughter Susan.
