Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway (born September 16, 1800 – died January 2, 1873) was an important Scottish nobleman and politician. He held the title of Lord Lieutenant for two areas in Scotland: Kirkcudbright from 1828 to 1845, and Wigton from 1828 to 1851. A Lord Lieutenant is like the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. Before he became the Earl of Galloway, he was known by the title Viscount Garlies from 1806 to 1834.

Randolph Stewart was born on September 16, 1800. He was the oldest of eight children. His parents were George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway and Lady Jane Paget.

He had several siblings. His sister, Lady Jane Stewart, married George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough. Another sister, Lady Louisa Stewart, married William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham. His younger brother, Keith Stewart, became a Vice Admiral.

Randolph's grandparents on his father's side were John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway and Anne Dashwood. His mother's father was Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge.

He went to school at Harrow School and then studied at Christ Church, Oxford University. A famous artist named Frederick Yeates Hurlstone painted his portrait.

His Career in Politics

Randolph Stewart was a member of the Tory political party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Cockermouth. He was an MP from 1826 to 1831.

He took over the MP role from Sir John Lowther, 2nd Baronet, of Swillington, who then took it back after Randolph. While he was an MP, he worked with other politicians like William Carus Wilson and Laurence Peel.

When his father passed away on March 27, 1834, Randolph inherited several important titles. These included Earl of Galloway and Lord Garlies. He also inherited the family home, Galloway House, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. During his time owning Galloway House, he had a lot of work done on it. He hired an architect named William Burn in 1841 to make changes, including adding an extra floor to parts of the building.

His Family Life

On August 9, 1833, Randolph Stewart married Lady Harriet Blanche Somerset. She was the daughter of Henry Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort. Together, they had a large family of 13 children: 6 sons and 7 daughters.

Their children included:

  • Lady Helen Blanche Stewart (1834–1903)
  • Alan Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway (1835–1901), who later became the 10th Earl.
