Randolph Henry Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway (born 14 October 1836 – died 7 February 1920) was an important person from Scotland. He was a high-level cricket player and a British Army officer. He also held the title of the 11th Earl of Galloway, which is a noble rank.
Early Life and Cricket
Randolph Henry Stewart was born in October 1836 at Galloway House. His parents were Randolph Stewart, the 9th Earl of Galloway, and Lady Harriett Blanche Somerset.
He went to school at Harrow School. While there, he played first-class cricket in 1856. This is a very high level of cricket. He played for a team called the Gentlemen of England. He played two matches against other teams from Surrey, Sussex, and Kent.
Military Career
After finishing school, Stewart joined the British Army in March 1855. He started as an ensign, which is a junior officer rank, in a group called the 42nd Highlanders. By August 1855, he became a lieutenant.
Stewart was involved in the Crimean War. He was present during the Siege and Fall of Sevastopol. For his service, the Ottoman Empire gave him the Turkish Crimea Medal.
He also served during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He was at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857. After the rebellion ended, Stewart continued to serve in British Indian. He worked as a brigade-major in Ferozepore in 1859. In 1860, he became a deputy assistant quartermaster-general in Allahabad. In June 1864, he was promoted to the rank of captain. Later in his life, he also worked as a justice of the peace, helping with local law and order.
Family and Later Life
In June 1891, Stewart married Amy Mary Pauline Cliffe. They had two children together.
On 7 February 1901, he became the 11th Earl of Galloway. This happened after his older brother, Alan Stewart, passed away. His brother had also played first-class cricket.
Lord Galloway died in February 1920 at Cumlowden House in Minnigaff. After his death, his son, Randolph, became the 12th Earl of Galloway. His nephews, Alexander Stewart and James Stewart, were also first-class cricketers.
