Kirkcudbrightshire, also known as the County of Kirkcudbright or the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, is a historic area in south-western Scotland. It's part of a larger region called Galloway. Today, it is part of the Dumfries and Galloway council area.
This county is sometimes called East Galloway. It shares the Galloway region with Wigtownshire. Kirkcudbrightshire has clear borders. To the north and north-west, it meets Ayrshire. To the west and south-west, it borders Wigtownshire. The Irish Sea and the Solway Firth are to its south and south-east. Finally, Dumfriesshire is to its east and north-east.

Kirkcudbrightshire has a strong and unique local identity. It used to be a special district within the Dumfries and Galloway region. This was from 1975 to 1996.

Today, the area known as the Stewartry is an important local committee area. It is represented by eight local councillors. These councillors help make decisions for the area. The daily running of the area is managed by a Stewartry Area Manager. This manager works from Kirkcudbright, which is the main town of the county.
