Between these two hills, you'll find the Lochans of Auchniebut. These are small bodies of water located very high up, around 650 meters (2,130 feet) above sea level. They might even be the highest permanent lakes in the entire Southern Uplands!

On its southwest side, Milldown is surrounded by a forest plantation. This forest is also very high up, possibly the highest planted commercial forest in the Southern Uplands. Like many hills in this area, the easiest way to climb Milldown is from the east, starting at a place called Forrest Lodge.
