This article lists the Donald mountains in Scotland by how tall they are. Donalds are a special group of mountains in the Scottish Lowlands. They were first defined in 1935 by Percy Donald, a member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club ("SMC").

To be a Donald, a mountain must be over 2,000 feet (609.6 m) (about 610 meters) tall. It also needs to stand out from the land around it by at least 100 feet (30.5 m) (about 30 meters). This "standing out" is called its prominence. Percy Donald also said they needed "sufficient topographical merit," meaning they looked like proper mountains.

What are Donald Hills and Donald Tops?

Percy Donald's system divides Donalds into two types: Donald Hills and Donald Tops.

Donald Hills

Donald Hills are the main peaks. They are the highest points in an area, with a good drop before the next higher mountain. They usually have a prominence of over 100 feet (30.5 m).

Donald Tops

Donald Tops are smaller peaks that are still over 2,000 feet (609.6 m) tall. They are often found on the slopes or ridges of higher mountains. There must be a drop of at least 50 feet (15.2 m) between a Top and any higher peak. Some Donald Tops have very little prominence, like Cairn Hill West Top with only 16 feet (4.9 m) of prominence. Others, like Beninner, can have up to 220 feet (67.1 m).

How many Donalds are there?

Percy Donald's first list in 1935 had 133 Donalds. Today, the SMC lists 140 Donalds in the Scottish Lowlands. These include 89 Donald Hills and 51 Donald Tops.

Many Donalds are also known by other mountain lists, like Corbetts or Grahams.

New Donalds

In 1995, a new list called New Donalds was created by Alan Dawson. These mountains are also in the Scottish Lowlands (south of the Highland Boundary Fault). For a New Donald, a peak needs to have a prominence of at least 30 m (98.4 ft).

There are 118 New Donalds. All Donald Hills are also New Donalds. However, 22 Donald Tops are not New Donalds because their prominence is less than 30 m (98.4 ft).

Becoming a Donaldist

People who climb all the SMC Donalds are called Donaldists. The first person to do this was Percy Donald himself, on May 23, 1933. A list of all Donaldists is kept.

Donald Mountains by Height

This list shows the Donald mountains in order of their height. The information comes from the Database of British and Irish Hills ("DoBIH") from October 2018.

The SMC doesn't change its list of Donalds. However, the DoBIH updates its measurements as new surveys are done. So, the heights listed here might change slightly over time.

     This mountain is one of the 22 Donald Tops that are NOT New Donalds. Its prominence is below 30 m (98.4 ft).      This mountain is also a Corbett.      This mountain is also a Graham.
