Herman Law is a cool hill located in the Ettrick Hills range. This range is part of the Southern Uplands in beautiful Scotland. It's a special hill because it marks the end of a ridge on its northeast side. This ridge runs right next to the A708 road to the south. Herman Law is also unique because it's the last hill on this ridge that sits right on the border between two Scottish areas: Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.
Discover Herman Law
Herman Law stands at about 614.4 meters (that's around 2,016 feet) above sea level. It's known as a "Donald" hill, which is a special type of mountain in Scotland. It just barely meets the rules to be called a Donald, needing at least 30 meters (about 98 feet) of "prominence." Prominence means how much a peak sticks up from the land around it. Think of it as how tall a hill looks from its lowest point.
Where is Herman Law?
This hill is found in the southern part of Scotland. It's part of the larger Southern Uplands, which is a range of hills and mountains. Specifically, Herman Law is in the Ettrick Hills. What's really neat is that it sits right on the edge where the regions of Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders meet. This means you could be standing with one foot in each area!
What is a 'Donald' Hill?
In Scotland, hills are often grouped into different lists. A "Donald" is a Scottish hill that is over 2,000 feet (609.6 meters) high and has a "prominence" of at least 30 meters. Herman Law is the least prominent of all the Donalds, meaning it just barely qualifies. These lists help hikers and climbers keep track of the many amazing hills to explore in Scotland.
Climbing Herman Law
Most people who climb Herman Law don't just climb it by itself. They usually climb it along with the other hills on the same ridge. A common place to start this adventure is from a spot called Birkhill Farm, which is to the west of the hill. Climbing these hills offers great views of the Scottish countryside and a chance to experience nature.
