Climbing White Coomb
You can climb White Coomb from a car park near the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. This car park is run by the National Trust for Scotland. It is on the A708 road, which goes from Moffat to Selkirk.
The Direct Path
The quickest way up is to go straight west. This path follows a steep ridge. It can be a tough climb.
The Waterfall Path
A more comfortable way to climb is to follow a good path. This path goes along the north side of the waterfall. After the waterfall, you need to cross the Tail Burn. This is a fast-flowing stream. There are many natural stepping stones to help you cross. But be careful if the water is high or if it's icy. It can be dangerous then.
Once you cross the stream, look for a wall. Follow this wall through the peat and heather. It will lead you to the top of Upper Tarnberry. From there, you will follow the east ridge. This part can be steep and rocky. It leads you right to the wide top of White Coomb.
An Adventure Route
The Daily Telegraph newspaper called another route "one of Britain's finest walks." This path follows the Tail Burn stream to Loch Skeen. Loch Skeen is a beautiful lake. From the lake, you climb up a ridge to Mid Craig. Then you pass Donald's Cleuch Head to reach the summit.
For coming down, it is suggested to go via Rough Craig. Then you head south to reach the road. From there, you can walk back to where you started.
Smaller Hills Nearby
White Coomb has many smaller hills around it. These are called subsidiary summits. There are 18 of them listed in a special database for hills. Some of these smaller peaks include Cape Law, Erie Hill, Garelet Dod, Lochcraig Head, Molls Cleuch Dod, and Under Saddle Yoke.
