What Makes Croft Head Special?

One of the best things about Croft Head is its incredible views. From the top, you can see for miles around!

  • To the south and east, you can spot the Solway Firth. This is a large bay that separates Scotland from England. You can also see the fells and mountains of Cumbria and the Pennines.
  • Look north, and you'll see the impressive Moffat Hills. These are much bigger mountains nearby.
  • To the west, you can see Queensberry and the Lowther Hills. Many of the Galloway Hills are also visible on a clear day.

Exploring Croft Head: Fun Routes

Reaching the summit of Croft Head is an exciting adventure. There are a couple of ways to get there, especially if you start from the town of Moffat.

Easy Path from Moffat

The easiest way to climb Croft Head is by taking the Southern Upland Way path. This famous long-distance trail passes close by.

  • Start your journey east from the Moffat water bridge. This bridge is near a place called Craigbeck.
  • Follow the path, and you'll gradually make your way up towards the summit.

A Dramatic Ridge Loop

For those who love a bit more of a challenge, a "ridge loop" offers a thrilling hike.

  • Begin by climbing north on a forestry fire road. This road is just after Craigbeck Hope cottage.
  • You'll go via Gateshaw Rig to reach Croft Head's summit.
  • To complete the loop, you can descend via Cat Shoulder. This path leads you back to where the Southern Upland Way meets the Selcoth burn pass. It's a great way to see different parts of the hill!
