Imagine a special club for mountains! In Scotland, mountains over 3,000 feet (about 914 meters) tall with a certain "drop" around them are called Munros. But what about tall mountains outside Scotland that fit the same rules? That's where Furths come in!
Furths are mountains in England, Wales, and Ireland that are over 3,000 feet high, just like Munros. The word "furth" means "outside of," so these are the "Munros outside of Scotland." People sometimes call them "Welsh Munros," "Irish Munros," or "English Munros." Climbing all of them, along with the Scottish Munros, is a big challenge!
To be a Furth, a mountain must be over 3,000 feet tall. Some definitions also say a Furth needs to have a "prominence" of at least 30 meters (about 98 feet). Prominence is how much a mountain rises from the lowest point connecting it to a higher peak. It's like how much a mountain "sticks up" from its surroundings. The official list from the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) includes a few Furths that have a prominence less than 30 meters. For example, Caher West Top in Ireland has a prominence of only 24 meters (about 79 feet).
If a Furth has a prominence of more than 150 meters (about 492 feet), it's considered a "Real Munro." There are 14 such mountains. Even bigger are the "Super-Majors," which are over 3,000 feet tall and have a prominence of more than 600 meters (about 1,968 feet). There are 10 of these amazing peaks!
The SMC lists 34 Furths in total: 6 in England, 15 in Wales, and 13 in Ireland. This is a smaller number compared to the 282 Munros in Scotland. People who successfully climb all the Munros and all 34 Furths are called Furthists. As of October 2018, there were 631 registered Furthists. The first person to complete this challenge was James A. Parker in 1929. In 1986, Ashley Cooper became the first to climb all 3,000-foot peaks in one long, continuous journey, covering 2,500 kilometers (about 1,553 miles) and climbing 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) in 111 days!
