Carnedd Dafydd is a huge mountain in the Carneddau mountain range. You can find it in Snowdonia, North Wales. It's one of the tallest peaks in Wales. In fact, it's the third highest mountain there! It stands tall between two other famous peaks: Carnedd Llewelyn to its north and Pen yr Ole Wen to its south.
This mountain is part of the main ridge of the Carneddau. It also sits right on the border between two Welsh counties, Gwynedd and Conwy. The weather on Carnedd Dafydd is quite cool. The average temperature on the mountain is usually around 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.

How to Climb Carnedd Dafydd
Most people climb Carnedd Dafydd by first going up Pen yr Ole Wen. From there, they follow the mountain ridge to reach Carnedd Dafydd. This path offers amazing views.
You can also climb Carnedd Dafydd directly. To do this, you start from a place called Tal y Llyn Ogwen. You follow a stream called Afon Lloer. This stream leads you to a mountain lake named Ffynnon Lloer. From the lake, you then climb up the slope to the very top of the mountain.
What's the Summit Like?
Like many mountains in the southern Carneddau, Carnedd Dafydd has a flat top. This summit is covered with many large rocks and boulders. It's a rugged and wild place.
Just north of the summit, you'll find steep cliffs called Ysgolion Duon. These cliffs are very well known to rock climbers. They offer a challenging climb for experienced adventurers.
The Story Behind the Name
The name Carnedd Dafydd means "Dafydd's cairn" in Welsh. A cairn is a pile of stones often used as a landmark. This mountain, along with its neighbor Carnedd Llewelyn, is named after important historical figures.
Carnedd Llewelyn is named after Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. He was the very last independent prince of Wales. Carnedd Dafydd is named after Llywelyn's younger brother, Dafydd ap Gruffydd.
Who was Dafydd ap Gruffudd?
Dafydd ap Gruffudd was an important Welsh leader. He was captured in 1283 near a place called Bera Mawr. He was then taken to Shrewsbury. There, he was executed.
Who was Gwenllian?
There's another nearby peak called Carnedd Lladron. It was also known as Carnedd Uchaf. However, it has now been officially renamed Carnedd Gwenllian. This new name honors Lady Gwenllian. She was the daughter of Prince Llywelyn.
