About Carnedd Gwenllian
Carnedd Gwenllian stands at 925 meters (3,035 feet) tall. It is located between two other peaks, Foel Fras and Foel Grach. Even though it's part of the Welsh 3000s, it's sometimes considered a 'smaller' peak. This is because its summit doesn't rise much higher than the ridge it's on.
The mountain is also known as a Hewitt. A Hewitt is a hill in England, Wales, or Ireland that is at least 2,000 feet (610 meters) high and has a drop of at least 30 meters (98 feet) on all sides.
The Slopes and Weather
The sides of Carnedd Gwenllian are mostly covered in grass, and they can be quite steep. In winter, especially during snowstorms, a lot of snow can pile up on its slopes. Sometimes, snow can even stay on the mountain until June! The average temperature on Carnedd Gwenllian is quite cold, usually around 4 to 5 degrees Celsius (about 39-41 degrees Fahrenheit).
Why the Name Change?
For several years, a group called the Princess Gwenllian Society worked hard to change the mountain's name. They wanted it to be named after Gwenllian of Wales. On September 26, 2009, their efforts paid off. The peak was officially renamed Carnedd Gwenllian.
Since 2010, the Ordnance Survey, which makes maps, has used both names on its maps: Carnedd Uchaf/Carnedd Gwenllian.
Who Was Princess Gwenllian?
Gwenllian of Wales (1282–1337) was a very important person in Welsh history. She was the only daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, who was the last independent Prince of Wales. After her father died, Gwenllian was taken to a nunnery (a place where nuns live) in Sempringham, England. She lived there until she passed away. Naming the mountain after her helps to remember her story and her connection to Welsh history.
