The Bones (also known as Na Cnámha in Irish) is a mountain in Ireland. It stands at 957 meters (3,140 feet) tall. This makes it one of the highest peaks in the country. It is found in the beautiful MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range. This range is located in County Kerry.
The Bones is a small, sharp peak. It is part of the exciting Beenkeragh Ridge. Sometimes, people confuse it with another peak called The Bone. That peak is part of Maolán Buí.

The Bones is the highest point on a narrow, rocky ridge. This ridge is known as the Beenkeragh Ridge. It sits between two very famous mountains. These are Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh. Carrauntoohil is Ireland's tallest mountain. Beenkeragh is the second tallest. All three are in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks range.
The Beenkeragh Ridge is known for its challenging walks. It is often climbed as part of a longer route. This route is called the Coomloughra Horseshoe. It is a popular adventure for experienced hikers.
Why is The Bones Confused with Another Peak?
The Bones is often mixed up with The Bone. The Bone is a part of the nearby Maolán Buí mountain. To help avoid confusion, especially during mountain rescues, the Kerry Mountain Rescue (KMR) and the Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) suggested a change. They wanted the official name of The Bones to be Na Cnámha on maps. This helps everyone know which mountain is which.
How Tall is The Bones?
The Bones is considered a very important mountain in different lists. It is the 321st-highest mountain peak in Britain and Ireland. This is according to the Simm classification.
The Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) calls The Bones one of the 34 Furths. A Furth is a mountain over 3,000 feet (914 meters) tall. It also meets other special rules, like being separate enough from other peaks. These rules are usually for mountains in Scotland called Munros. But since The Bones is outside Scotland, it's called a Furth. This is why The Bones is sometimes known as one of the 13 Irish Munros.
The height and shape of The Bones also qualify it for other mountain lists. These include the Arderin, Simm, and Hewitt classifications.
