Maolán Buí is found in the eastern part of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks. This is Ireland's highest mountain range. The mountain sits on a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hilltop.

To the northeast of Maolán Buí is Cnoc na Péiste, which is 988 meters high. To the southwest is Cnoc an Chuillinn, at 958 meters. These mountains are all part of a larger eastern ridge. This ridge also includes peaks like The Big Gun (939 meters) and Cruach Mhór (932 meters).

The Bone

A special part of Maolán Buí is a narrow ridge called The Bone. This ridge goes towards the northwest. It is not to be confused with another nearby peak called The Bones.

The Bone is known as a safe way to leave the main ridge of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks. Hikers can use it to go down into an area called the Hag's Glen. From there, they can exit through Cronin's Yard.

Mountain Classifications

Maolán Buí is considered a significant mountain in Ireland and the British Isles. It is listed as the 278th-highest mountain in Britain and Ireland on the Simm classification.

It is also one of the 34 "Furths." A Furth is a mountain over 3,000 feet (914 meters) tall. It must also meet certain other rules, like being far enough from other peaks. These mountains are outside of Scotland, which is why they are called "furth" (meaning "outside"). Maolán Buí is one of 13 Irish mountains that fit this description.
