Elizabeth Huckaby: A Champion for Students

Elizabeth Huckaby played a key role in a major moment in American history. She was the Vice-Principal for Girls at Little Rock Central High School. In 1957, she had a very important job. She was responsible for the safety of six young Black women. These students were part of the Little Rock Nine. They were the first Black students to attend the school. This happened after schools began to end separation by race.

Her Book and the Film

Elizabeth Huckaby kept a diary during this time. She later used it to write a book. The book is called Crisis at Central High: Little Rock 1957–58. It was published in 1980. This book shares her experiences and what happened at the school. In 1981, a TV movie was made based on her book. The famous actress Joanne Woodward played Elizabeth Huckaby in the film.

Her Life and Education

Elizabeth Huckaby's father was a Presbyterian minister. She studied education at the University of Arkansas. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees there. While she was an undergraduate, she was chosen for Phi Beta Kappa. This is a special honor for students who do very well in their studies. Her husband, Glenn Huckaby, was also an educator. He worked for the Little Rock School District for many years.
