Sarah Elizabeth "Tizzy" Lockman is an American politician. She is a member of the Democratic Party, which is one of the main political groups in the United States. She works in the Delaware Senate, which is like a big council that helps make laws for the state of Delaware. She represents an area called District 3. This district includes parts of Wilmington, like the busy downtown and Riverfront areas.
About Elizabeth Lockman
Elizabeth Lockman grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, on the west side of the city. She went to Alexis I. duPont High School and graduated from there. After high school, she continued her education. She earned a bachelor's degree from New York University. Later, she received a master's degree from the University of Delaware. Today, she teaches as a professor at the University of Delaware.
Her Work in Politics
In 2014, Elizabeth Lockman started her political journey. The Governor at the time, Jack Markell, chose her to join the Wilmington Education Advisory Committee. This group gave advice about schools in Wilmington. Later, this group became the Wilmington Education Improvement Commission, and Lockman became its vice chair.
In 2018, Lockman ran for a seat in the Delaware Senate. She won the Democratic primary election against Jordan Hines. This was a big win because the person who held the seat before, Robert Marshall, had been there for over 40 years. Since she had no opponent in the main election, her win meant she would become a state senator. Elizabeth Lockman is the second African-American woman to be elected to the Delaware Senate. The first was Margaret Rose Henry, who retired just before Lockman was elected. In 2020, her fellow senators chose her for an important role: Senate Majority Whip. This means she helps make sure her party's members vote together on important issues.
Her Family Life
In December 2020, Elizabeth Lockman married John Collins.
