Elizabeth Indino Ramsey (born December 3, 1931 – died October 8, 2015) was a famous singer, comedian, and actress from the Philippines. She worked in entertainment for almost 60 years. Elizabeth Ramsey became well-known for her unique looks, funny stage acts, and jokes. She often spoke with a strong Visayan accent. She was also the mother of the popular Filipino singer Jaya.

Early life

Elizabeth Ramsey was born on December 3, 1931. Her birthplace was San Carlos City in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Her father was Arturo C. Ramsey, a United States merchant marine of Jamaican descent. He was stationed in the Philippines. Her mother was Marcelina Rivera Indino. Marcelina was born in San Carlos City to a family with Filipino and Spanish roots.

Career Highlights

Elizabeth Ramsey's career started in 1958. She won a singing contest on Student Canteen. This was the first noontime TV show in the Philippines. After winning, she was asked to perform at the Manila Grand Opera House. Later, she performed at the famous Clover Theater.

Her powerful voice and lively rock and roll performances earned her a special title. She became known as the country's "Queen of Rock and Roll." Some of her most famous songs include "Proud Mary," "Razzle Dazzle," and "Waray-Waray."

Performing in the U.S.

By 1961, Elizabeth Ramsey began performing in Las Vegas. She also performed in other parts of the United States. She was the first Filipino to star in a Las Vegas show. This show was called the Philippine Festival. She also performed for American soldiers. She sang at U.S. bases in the Philippines. She even sang on the USS Enterprise for wounded soldiers during the Vietnam War.

Acting Roles

Ramsey also became an actress. She appeared in several important films. These include Prinsesa Naranja (1960) and Reyna ng Pitong Gatang (1980). She also starred in Ang Bukas ay Akin (1963). For this film, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 1963 FAMAS Awards. In 1976, she became even more famous. This happened after she played Cleopatra in a popular TV commercial for Superwheel Detergent Bar.

In the 1990s, she returned to the Philippines. She had lived in the United States for several years. She made a successful return to showbiz. She appeared in many movies and TV shows.

Personal Life

Elizabeth Ramsey had four children. Their names are Isaac Johnson Jr., Mary Ann Johnson, Susan Johnson, and Maria Luisa Ramsey. Maria Luisa Ramsey is also known as the singer Jaya. Elizabeth was married to Isaac Johnson Sr., who was a Black American U.S. military merchant marine.

Death

Elizabeth Ramsey passed away on October 8, 2015. She died peacefully in her sleep. She was 83 years old. Her death was caused by a hyperglycemic attack.
