Elizabeth Thynne, Marchioness of Bath (born Lady Elizabeth Bentinck), was an important person in the British royal court. She lived from 1735 to 1825. She was married to Thomas Thynne, who became the 1st Marquess of Bath. For many years, she served Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.

Early Life and Family

Elizabeth Bentinck was born on July 27, 1735, at Welbeck Abbey. Her father was William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland. Her mother was Margaret.

On March 22, 1759, Elizabeth married Thomas Thynne. They were married at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster. At the time, Thomas was known as the 3rd Viscount Weymouth. After their marriage, Elizabeth became Viscountess Weymouth.

Life at Court

Elizabeth Thynne had important roles in the royal court. From 1761 to 1793, she was a Lady of the Bedchamber. This meant she was a close attendant to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was the Queen of King George III of the United Kingdom.

In 1793, Elizabeth took on an even higher position. She became the Mistress of the Robes. This role meant she was in charge of the Queen's clothes and jewelry. She held this important job until the Queen passed away in 1818.

Her Children

Elizabeth and Thomas Thynne had several children together. They had three sons and at least three daughters. Their children included:

  • Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath
  • Lady Isabella Thynne
  • Lady Mary Thynne
  • Lady Louisa Thynne (1760–1832): She married Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford and had children.
  • Lady Henrietta Thynne (1762–1813): She married Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield and also had children.
  • Lady Sophia Thynne (1763–1791): She married George Ashburnham, 3rd Earl of Ashburnham and had children.
  • George Thynne, 2nd Baron Carteret of Hawnes (1770–1838): He married Harriet Courtenay but did not have children.
  • John Thynne, 3rd Baron Carteret of Hawnes (1772–1849): He married Mary Anne Master and did not have children.

Later Life

In 1789, Elizabeth's husband, Thomas, became the Marquess of Bath. This meant Elizabeth's title changed from Viscountess to Marchioness. She lived to be 90 years old. Elizabeth Thynne passed away on December 12, 1825, in London.
