Where is Diamond Creek Township?

Diamond Creek Township covers a large area of about 144.4 square miles (373.99 square kilometers). Many small streams flow through this area. Some of these streams are Collett Creek, Diamond Creek, and Wildcat Creek.

Elmdale: A Town in the Township

The only town located within Diamond Creek Township today is Elmdale.

Hymer: A Community from the Past

Hymer was a small community that used to exist in this township. It was located near Diamond Creek, about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Cottonwood Falls. Hymer was also a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which was a major train line.

In 1910, about 30 people lived in Hymer. The community had its own post office for many years, from 1872 until 1943. The name "Hymer" came from the last name of Frank and George Hegwer, who were some of the first landowners there.

Elk: Another Former Community

Elk was another community that used to be in Diamond Creek Township. It was located near Middle Creek, about 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Cottonwood Falls. In the early 1900s, people living in Elk would get their mail and send things from a place called Antelope, which was in a nearby county.

In 1910, about 45 people lived in Elk. This community also had a post office from 1874 until 1924. After that, mail was delivered by rural free delivery, meaning mail carriers brought it directly to homes. Elk also had a general store and a blacksmith shop, which was a place where people made and repaired things out of metal.
