The Elk Lakes are two beautiful lakes high up in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. They are known as Upper Elk Lake and Lower Elk Lake. These lakes are very special because they are the starting point of the Elk River.

Discovering the Elk Lakes

The Elk Lakes are found in a valley between two large mountains. To the south is Mount Aosta, and to the north is Mount Fox. The lakes are also quite close to the border between British Columbia and Alberta. They are only about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away from it.

What Makes the Elk Lakes Special?

Upper Elk Lake is where the Elk River begins its journey. This means the lakes and the area around them are at the very northern end of the Elk Valley. Because this area is so important and beautiful, it is protected as Elk Lakes Provincial Park. This park helps keep the natural environment safe for everyone to enjoy.

Fun Things to Do at Elk Lakes

If you visit the Elk Lakes, there are some cool things to explore! A short walk east of Lower Elk Lake, you'll find the Elk Lakes cabin. This cabin is looked after by the Alpine Club of Canada, a group that helps people enjoy the mountains safely.

There are also many fun things to do outdoors. You can go hiking on the trails around the lakes. If you love camping, there's a special tent-camping site nearby where you can stay and enjoy nature.
