Ellen Elizabeth "Elle" Smith was born on June 19, 1998. She is an American journalist and a beauty pageant winner. Elle Smith was crowned Miss USA 2021. After winning Miss USA, she represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2021 competition. There, she placed in the Top 10. Before becoming Miss USA, Smith won the title of Miss Kentucky USA 2021. She is the second woman from Kentucky to win the Miss USA title.

Early Life and School
Ellen Elizabeth Smith was born on June 19, 1998, in Springfield, Ohio. Her parents are Samuel Clayborne and Lydia Smith. Elle has a Black father and a White mother. Her Black ancestors lived in Kentucky a long time ago. After the American Civil War, her family moved to Ohio.
Elle Smith finished Shawnee High School in 2016. She was a great student. She was involved in many activities like choir, orchestra, volleyball, and drama. After high school, she moved to Lexington, Kentucky. She went to the University of Kentucky.
In 2020, she earned a degree in broadcast journalism. This means she learned how to report news on TV or radio. She also studied political science. While at the university, she was a leader in the National Association of Black Journalists group. After college, Smith became a reporter for WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. She reported on news in the Louisville metropolitan area.
Pageant Competitions
Elle Smith first became interested in beauty pageants in high school. One of her classmates, Brittany Reid, won Miss Ohio Teen USA 2013. This inspired Elle. However, Elle did not compete in a pageant herself until eight years later. In 2021, she entered and won the Miss Kentucky USA 2021 pageant. She represented the Germantown, Louisville area.
Winning Miss USA 2021
As Miss Kentucky USA, Elle Smith went on to compete in the Miss USA 2021 pageant. She won the competition on November 29, 2021. The event took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Elle Smith was the second person from Kentucky to win the Miss USA crown. The first was Tara Conner in 2006.
During the final questions, Elle picked judge Ty Hunter. He asked her about being environmentally friendly in businesses. He asked, "How can we encourage businesses to be more environmentally conscious?" Elle answered:
I think we've got to look at it from a macro level and also a micro level. So at the macro level, companies need to switch to green energy, I think that's something we can all agree on. On the micro level, we all know how to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and those are things that we can implement in our daily lives.
After winning, Smith moved to Los Angeles. She spent her year as Miss USA attending many events.
Competing in Miss Universe 2021
As Miss USA, Elle Smith represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant. She did very well in this international competition. Elle reached the Top 10 finalists.
