Ellen Rona Barkin (born April 16, 1954) is an American actress who has starred in many popular movies and television shows. She became famous for her role in the 1982 movie Diner. Over the years, she has appeared in films like The Big Easy (1986), Sea of Love (1989), and Ocean's Thirteen (2007).
Barkin has won major awards for her acting. In 1998, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for the TV movie Before Women Had Wings. In 2011, she won a Tony Award for her first-ever performance on Broadway in the play The Normal Heart.
From 2016 to 2019, she played the main character, Janine "Smurf" Cody, in the drama series Animal Kingdom. She also starred in the comedy show The New Normal from 2012 to 2013.

Growing Up in New York
Ellen Barkin was born on April 16, 1954, in the Bronx, a part of New York City. Her mother, Evelyn, was a hospital administrator, and her father, Sol, was a chemical salesman. Her family was Jewish, with roots in Siberia and the Ukrainian-Polish border region.
Barkin grew up in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens. She went to the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, a special school for students talented in art and acting. After high school, she attended Hunter College, where she studied history and drama. For a while, she even thought about becoming a teacher of ancient history.
To improve her acting skills, she studied at the famous Actors Studio in New York City. She spent ten years learning and practicing acting before she got her first audition.
Acting Career

Barkin's first big success was in the 1982 movie Diner. Critics loved her performance, which helped start her career. The next year, she was in the movie Tender Mercies. The director, Bruce Beresford, was very impressed with her audition, even though she was not yet a well-known actress.

Broadway and Television Roles
In 2011, Barkin performed on Broadway for the first time in a play called The Normal Heart. Her performance was so good that she won a Tony Award, one of the highest honors in theater.
From 2016 to 2019, Barkin played the head of a crime family, Janine "Smurf" Cody, in the TNT television series Animal Kingdom. The show was based on an Australian movie of the same name. She also starred in the comedy series Happyish in 2015.
Personal Life
Barkin has two children from her first marriage to actor Gabriel Byrne: a son named Jack Daniel (born 1989) and a daughter named Romy Marion (born 1992). Barkin and Byrne divorced in 1999 but have remained good friends.
She was later married to businessman Ronald Perelman. They divorced in 2006.
In October 2006, a collection of Barkin's jewelry was sold at a Christie's auction in New York. The collection, called "Magnificent Jewels from the Collection of Ellen Barkin," sold for over $20 million.
