Kate Bosworth got her first movie role after an open audition in New York. She was chosen for a supporting part as Judith in the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer. The filmmakers needed someone who was good at riding horses, and Kate fit the bill perfectly. The movie was well-liked by critics.

In 2000, she acted in the TV show Young Americans as Bella Banks, but the show was canceled. That same year, she had a small role in the movie Remember the Titans. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles to find more acting opportunities.

Kate Bosworth's big break came in the 2002 surfing movie Blue Crush. To get ready for the role, she trained for months, working out seven hours a day with two trainers. She gained 15 pounds of muscle to look like a real surfer!

A reviewer from Rolling Stone magazine, Peter Travers, said that Bosworth was "a star in the making." The movie got good reviews and earned a lot of money at the box office. After Blue Crush, Kate took on the main role in the film Wonderland (2003) alongside Val Kilmer.

In 2004, she played the main character in the romantic comedy Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, with Topher Grace. Later that year, she played actress Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea. While the movie itself had mixed reviews and wasn't a big hit, many people praised Kate's acting. The next year, she played Chali in the movie Bee Season (2005).
