History of Ellenboro
Ellenboro is a historic town in Rutherford County. It has a unique story about how it started.
How Ellenboro Got Its Name
In 1880, a railroad line was built. It connected Wilmington to Rutherfordton. Ellenboro grew up at the highest point on this new railroad line. In 1884, the community was deciding on a name. A railroad engineer named John Robinson suggested naming it after his daughter, Ellen. She was very sick at the time. As a thank you, Robinson gave the town a large brass bell. This bell hung in the school for many years. It disappeared after a new school was built.
"Big Days" Celebrations
In the early days, "Big Days" was a very important event. It happened every year in early July. People came from all over to join the fun. The celebrations included a merry-go-round powered by steam. There were also sack races and foot races. People enjoyed minstrel shows and side shows. Farmers sold their produce, and lemonade was served from big tubs.
The Colfax Free Fair
In 1928, a teacher named A.B. Bushong started the first Colfax Free Fair. He was an agriculture teacher at Ellenboro School. The fair was held in early fall on the school grounds. It was a chance for farmers and homemakers to show off their best work. They displayed canned goods, baked goods, crops, and handmade items. Students also showed their projects and won ribbons. There were even beauty and baby contests.
A big part of the fair was the rides. Lee Rides provided them every year, which was very exciting for kids. The fair is still held every September. It has become a special time for former students and residents to come home. They visit friends and catch up on the news.
