Ellie Madison Carpenter (born on 28 April 2000) is an Australian professional soccer player. She plays as a defender for the French club Lyon. She also plays for the Australia national team, known as the Matildas.

Ellie has played for several teams in Australia's W-League. These include Western Sydney Wanderers, Canberra United, and Melbourne City. She also played for Portland Thorns FC in the United States' National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Many people think she is one of the best female defenders in the world.

Carpenter made her first appearance for the Australian national team when she was only 15 years old. She was the first Australian international soccer player, male or female, to be born in the year 2000 or later. She was also the youngest Australian athlete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In fact, she was the youngest female soccer player ever to compete at the Olympics.

She also started playing in the W-League at age 15. In May 2018, at 18 years old, she became the youngest player to ever play in an NWSL game. Ellie Carpenter was named the W-League's Young Footballer of the Year three times in a row, from 2018 to 2020.

Ellie Carpenter is the only Australian player to win the UEFA Women's Champions League (UWCL). She won it with Lyon in the 2020 and 2022 finals. Only one other Australian, Harry Kewell, has won the men's version of the tournament.

Early Life and Education

Ellie Madison Carpenter was born on 28 April 2000 in Cowra, New South Wales. This town is about 300 kilometers west of Sydney. She grew up on a farm with her parents, who were both physical education teachers.

As a child, Ellie often traveled long distances to play soccer. She played in towns like Young, Canberra, and Sydney. When she was 12, her family moved to Sydney. This allowed her to attend Westfields Sports High School, a school known for sports. She also went to Cowra and Mulyan Public Schools. At age 17, she left school to focus completely on her soccer career.

Club Career

Playing for Western Sydney Wanderers

Ellie Carpenter joined Western Sydney Wanderers in September 2015. During the 2015–16 W-League season, she played as a starting defender in all twelve games. The Wanderers finished seventh that season. Even at just 15 years old, Ellie was a very good right-back defender. She often helped her team attack by running forward and sending crosses to her teammates. Her strong play earned her a spot at a training camp with the Matildas in November 2015.

Playing for Canberra United

In August 2017, Carpenter signed with Canberra United for the 2017–18 W-League season. She started in 10 of the 11 games she played and scored 2 goals. Her first goal was in a big 6–1 win against Adelaide United in January 2018. Canberra finished fifth that season. After the season, she won the league's Young Footballer of the Year award.

During the 2018–19 season, Carpenter scored in Canberra's first game, a 2–0 win over Melbourne City. She scored her second goal of the season in a 2–2 draw against her old team, Western Sydney Wanderers. This goal was a bit controversial because the Wanderers' goalkeeper was injured at the time. Canberra finished eighth that season. For the second year in a row, Carpenter was named Young Footballer of the Year.

In September 2019, Carpenter announced she would leave Canberra for another W-League team. She said she wanted "a new challenge and to experience new things."

During the 2018 season, Carpenter started in 16 of the 19 games she played and scored one goal. Portland finished second in the regular season and made it to the NWSL Playoffs. They won their semifinal game but lost 3–0 in the final. In the 2019 NWSL season, Carpenter started in 16 of 19 games. Portland finished third and reached the playoffs again, but lost in the semifinals.

Loan to Melbourne City FC

In October 2019, Carpenter joined Melbourne City for one season on loan. She started all 14 matches and scored two goals. On 20 February 2020, she scored two goals against her former team, Western Sydney Wanderers. This helped Melbourne win 4–0 and secure the league premiership. Melbourne City then won the Grand Final by beating Sydney FC 1–0. In July 2020, Carpenter won the Young Footballer of the Year award for the third time in a row.

Playing for Lyon

In June 2020, Ellie Carpenter moved to Lyon, a top French club. She signed a contract until 2023. On 14 August 2020, she played her first game for Lyon in a friendly match. She even helped set up a goal. She scored her first goal for Lyon on 27 September in a 2–1 win. Carpenter was a substitute who did not play in the Champions League final that Lyon won against Wolfsburg.

She won her second Champions League title in 2022. Her team beat Barcelona 3–1. However, she had to leave the game early due to an injury. On 28 June 2022, Lyon extended her contract until 30 June 2026.

Ellie Carpenter has played for Australia's senior national team, known as the Matildas. She also played for the under-17 and under-20 national teams.

When she was 14, Carpenter was first called up to the under-17 team in September 2014. She played her first game for the under-17 team in a win against Vietnam.

At age 15, Carpenter played her first game for the senior national team. This was on 2 March 2016, in a 9–0 win against Vietnam during the Olympic Qualifiers. Her appearance was special because she was the first Australian international player (male or female) born after the year 2000. She said it was "an amazing experience" and that she felt she "kept her composure and did well."

In July 2016, Carpenter was chosen for the Matildas squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics. At 16, she was the youngest Australian athlete at the Rio Olympics. She was also the youngest female soccer player ever to compete at the Olympics. The Matildas reached the quarterfinals but lost to Brazil in a penalty shootout.

In 2017, Carpenter played with the Matildas in the Tournament of Nations in the United States. Australia won the tournament after a big 6–1 win over Brazil. In one match against the United States, Carpenter was hit in the face by the ball. She had to leave the field for a moment but bravely returned with gauze in her nose. She helped the Matildas get a 1–1 draw against the 2015 FIFA World Cup champions.

In February 2019, Carpenter was part of the Matildas squad for the first FFA Cup of Nations. She helped the Matildas win the Cup.

At 19, Carpenter played in her first 2019 FIFA World Cup in France. Australia lost their first game but then won against Brazil after being two goals down. This was only the second time in World Cup history a team had done that. The Matildas finished second in their group and moved to the Round of 16. There, they lost to Norway in a penalty shootout.

Carpenter was also part of the Matildas team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Matildas reached the quarter-finals and beat Great Britain. They were then eliminated in the semi-final by Sweden. In the match for the Bronze medal, they were beaten by the USA.

On 3 July 2023, Carpenter was selected for the Matildas squad for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. On 4 June 2024, she was named to the Matildas team for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This will be her third time playing in the Olympics. She usually plays as a right-back.
