Ellis is a small, quiet community in Wisconsin, United States. It's not a city or a village, but an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live without its own separate local government. Instead, it's part of the larger town of Sharon, which is located in Portage County.
How Ellis Got Its Name
Long ago, this community was known by a different name: Poland Corners. But in 1867, something changed! That year, a post office was set up in the area. When the post office opened, the community was renamed Ellis.
The new name was chosen to honor a special person: Albert G. Ellis. At that time, he was the mayor of a nearby city called Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Finding Ellis on the Map
Ellis is located in the central part of Wisconsin. If you look on a map, you'll find it about six miles northeast of Stevens Point. It's also about four miles north of Custer. And if you travel southwest, it's about six miles from Rosholt.
You can find Ellis where State Road 66 meets Portage County Road J (to the south) and Ellis Road. State Road 66 runs right through Ellis. It's located between Portage County Road K to the north and another part of Road K to the south, near Polonia.
