Elliston is a small, unincorporated community located in Fairplay Township, Greene County, Indiana, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. It's more like a neighborhood or a collection of homes.
The History of Elliston
Elliston got its name from a person named Mr. Ellis, who was an early pioneer (one of the first settlers) in the area. A post office was opened here in 1885. It helped people send and receive mail until it closed down in 1910.
The Amazing Triple Railroad Crossing
Elliston was once famous for something very special: a rare "triple crossing." This was a unique spot where three different railroad lines crossed paths in the same area! Imagine three sets of train tracks all meeting up.
The three railroads were:
- The Bedford and Bloomfield Branch of the Monon Railroad
- The Evansville and Indiana Railroad (which later became part of the New York Central Railroad)
- The Indianapolis Southern/Illinois Central Railroad
These train lines all met at a small station. Two of the lines, the Monon and the Evansville and Indiana, crossed at the same level (called "at grade"). The third line, the Indianapolis Southern/Illinois Central, crossed directly above them on a bridge.
Today, only the old station building and the bridge from the Indianapolis Southern/Illinois Central line are still there. The bridge is still used by trains as part of the Indiana Rail Road's Indianapolis Subdivision.
Where is Elliston?
