A Look Back at Elma's History
Elma began in the late 1880s. This was when a railroad was built through the area. The railroad helped the town grow. The first post office in Elma opened in 1886.

In 2020, Elma had 505 residents living in 238 households. The city's population density was about 411.6 people per square mile. Most residents (96.0%) were White. About 2.2% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
The median age in Elma in 2020 was 57.2 years. This means half the people were older than 57.2 and half were younger. About 20.8% of residents were under 20 years old. Also, 35.6% of the population was 65 years or older.
Looking back at the 2010 census, Elma had 546 people. The racial makeup was similar, with 96.3% of residents being White. The median age was 51.3 years. About 19.8% of residents were under 18.
Schools in Elma
Public schools in Elma are part of the Howard–Winneshiek Community School District. This district was formed on July 1, 1960, by combining several smaller school districts.
Before the district merged, Elma had its own K–12 school district. The Elma Eagles Basketball Team made it to the state basketball championships twice in the 1930s. They went in 1932 and again in 1937.
After the school consolidation in 1960, a student named Jeff Skoda won a state wrestling championship. He won in 1972 in the 112-pound weight class while attending Crestwood High School.
In 2013, the school board decided to close Elma Elementary School.
