Elmo is a small, unincorporated community located in Grant County, Wisconsin, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a village. Instead, it's part of a larger area called a "town," which in this case is Smelser.
History of Elmo
How Elmo Got Its Name
The community of Elmo was named after a popular book. It was inspired by the 1866 novel St. Elmo, written by Augusta Jane Evans. This shows how literature can sometimes influence the names of places!
The Old Post Office
A post office was opened in Elmo in 1875. Post offices were very important back then. They helped people send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1924.
