History of the Town's Name
The Town of Smelser has had a few different names over time. It was sometimes called Smeltzer or Smeltzer's Grove. The name "Smeltzer's Grove" was actually the name of the local post office. You can find these older names in historical documents, like the original Wisconsin Constitution.
An early settler named J. M. Smelser, who came from Bourbon County, Kentucky, is believed to be the person the town was named after.
