Elmwood is a small, quiet place in Anderson County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. In the year 2000, about 25 people called Elmwood home. It is also part of the larger area around Palestine, Texas.

The Story of Elmwood
Elmwood first started as a settlement in the 1850s. It got its name in 1881 because of the many elm trees growing in the area.
Community Life in Early Elmwood
In 1881, the local newspaper, the Anderson County Herald, wrote about Elmwood. It mentioned that the community had a special group called a literary society. This group would meet every two weeks to debate and discuss different topics.
That same year, the people of Elmwood tried to get their own post office, but they were not successful.
Businesses and Farming
In the 1920s, Elmwood had a few businesses. There were two stores where people could buy things and even a barbershop. By 1933, the community had only one business left and about ten people living there.
The farms in Elmwood were important for the community. Farmers mostly grew cotton and raised poultry (like chickens) and dairy animals (like cows for milk).
Population Changes Over Time
From 1952 to 1987, Elmwood had about 20 residents. In 1985, there was a church in the community. By the year 2000, the population had grown slightly to 25 people.
Where is Elmwood?
Elmwood is located in the northeastern part of Anderson County. You can find it where county road 441 meets Farm to Market Road 315. It is about 11 miles (18 km) northeast of the city of Palestine.

In 1932, Elmwood had its own school. At that time, there were 56 white students and 112 African American students enrolled. Today, children living in Elmwood attend schools that are part of the Palestine Independent School District.
