Elobey Chico, also known as Little Elobey, is a small island located off the coast of Equatorial Guinea. It sits near the mouth of the Mitémélé River. Today, no one lives on this island.
Elobey Chico's Past
A Former Unofficial Capital
Even though Elobey Chico is tiny and empty now, it once played an important role. It was like the unofficial capital for a Spanish territory called Río Muni. This means that while it wasn't the official capital, it acted as one in practice.
The island was officially linked to a larger island called Fernando Pó. However, this connection wasn't very strong. It seemed more like a formal idea than a real working relationship.
Who Owned the Businesses?
During its time as an important center, many businesses and factories on Elobey Chico were owned by merchants from Hamburg, Germany. These "Hamburg Merchants" were likely involved in trade and other activities that made the island busy.
