Elsau is a town in Switzerland. It is a municipality located in the Winterthur district. Elsau is part of the canton of Zürich.

History of Elsau
Elsau was first mentioned in old records in the year 1043. Back then, its name was Elnesouva.
A special event happened on April 23, 1398. A count named Donat von Toggenburg gave the church in Elsow as a gift. He did this for a new altar at the Rüti Monastery. This gift was made to honor his daughter, Menta von Toggenburg, who had recently passed away.
Geography of Elsau
Elsau covers an area of about 8 square kilometers (3.1 square miles). A large part of this land, 56.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover 25.7% of the area.
About 17.2% of Elsau's land has buildings or roads. The remaining small part, 0.6%, includes things like rivers. In 1996, buildings and homes made up 10.9% of the total area. Roads and other transport areas made up 6.1%.
The town is located on both sides of the Eulach river. Elsau includes several villages. These are Elsau, Rümikon, and Räterschen. Since 1922, the villages of Unter- and Oberschottikon have also been part of Elsau. Rümikon was mentioned in records as early as 829.
People and Life in Elsau
Elsau has a population of about 3,700 people. As of 2007, about 11.9% of the people living in Elsau were from other countries. In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males (50.1%) and females (49.9%).
Over the last ten years, Elsau's population has grown by 14.5%. Most people in Elsau speak German (93.0%). Italian and Albanian are the next most common languages, each spoken by about 1.3% of the population.

Getting Around Elsau
Elsau has two railway stations. These are Räterschen and Schottikon. Both stations are part of the Zürich S-Bahn network. They are stops on line S35. This makes it easy to travel to and from Elsau by train.
