A Look Back: Bertschikon's History
Bertschikon was first written about in the year 1255. Back then, its name was Bersinkon. Another village, Gündlikon, might have been mentioned even earlier, in 774, but this is still debated by historians. It was definitely mentioned in 1162 as Gundilinchova.
The modern municipality of Bertschikon began to form during a time called the Helvetic Republic (1798–1803). However, it wasn't fully set up until 1882. This municipality was actually made up of seven older, smaller communities. These were Bertschikon, Gundetswil, Kefikon (only the part in Zürich), Liebensberg, Stegen, Gündlikon, and Zünikon.

Before it merged, Bertschikon covered an area of about 9.6 square kilometers (3.7 square miles). A large part of this land, about 68.8%, was used for farming. Forests covered about 20.2% of the area.

Bertschikon was unique because it included over 30 small villages, tiny communities called hamlets, and individual houses. These were spread out along its border with the Canton of Thurgau.
