Discovering Elsmore's Past
Early Settlement and Land Use
Elsmore began as a large farming area called a "station." It was first known as Glenmore. John Campbell settled this land in 1838. The station covered about 200 square kilometers (50,000 acres).
In the early days, different people owned the station. Campbell & Muir were the first official owners in 1839. By 1843, Brown & Alcorn took over. In 1850, the station had 66 horses and 1,300 cattle. Alexander Campbell owned Elsmore in 1852.
The Exciting Tin Rush
Around 1870, something very important happened in Elsmore. A shepherd named Joseph Wills found some heavy black grains. He was curious about them. These grains turned out to be tin.
This discovery led to Australia's first "tin rush." People hurried to search for tin in Elsmore and nearby areas like Inverell. The Elsmore mine became the first commercial tin mine in Australia. It has produced tin from river deposits since 1871.
Community Life and Modern Times
Elsmore had its own Post Office, which opened on February 1, 1873. It served the community for many years before closing in 1992. Today, the main ways people make a living in Elsmore are through mining and farming.
A special community called the Bruderhof started in Elsmore in 1999. Their community is known as Danthonia. They farm the land, create signs, and run a publishing company.
