Eluned Phillips facts for kids
Eluned Phillips (born October 27, 1914 – died January 10, 2009) was a very special Welsh poet. She was the only woman ever to win the bardic crown at the National Eisteddfod of Wales two times! This amazing achievement happened in 1967 in Bala and again in 1983 in Llangefni.
Phillips was born in Cenarth, Wales. Interestingly, she was born on the very same day as another famous Welsh writer, Dylan Thomas, who was born in Swansea. She knew Dylan Thomas, but he wasn't one of her closest friends. Instead, she had many other famous friends, including the artist Augustus John and the famous French singer Edith Piaf. It's even said that the legendary painter Pablo Picasso showed her his famous painting "Guernica" right after he finished it!
She passed away from pneumonia when she was 94 years old at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of the Gorsedd of Bards, a group of important Welsh poets and artists.
