A Look Back at Elvira's History
How Elvira Started
Elvira was officially planned and marked out on a map in 1854. This process is called "platting." W. H. Gibbs, who owned the land where the community was built, decided to name it Elvira. He chose this name to honor his wife, which was a common way to name places back then.
Growing Over Time
Like many small communities, Elvira's population changed over the years. In 1902, about 31 people lived there. By 1925, the number had grown slightly to 37 residents. The community saw more growth by 1940, when its population reached 150 people.
