Early Life and Family
Elvira came from a very important and powerful family in what is now Portugal and Galicia. Her father was Count Menendo González, who was the Count of Portucale (an important region). Her mother was named Toda Moniz.
Elvira grew up with Alfonso V of León, who would later become king. Her father, Menendo, was a trusted advisor to King Bermudo II of León. He also helped raise young Alfonso and ruled alongside Queen Elvira Garcia while Alfonso was still a child.
Queen of León
Elvira married King Alfonso V in 1013. This made her the Queen of León. She was an important figure in the royal court during her time.
Queen Elvira passed away on December 2, 1022. She was laid to rest in the Royal Pantheon at the Basilica of San Isidoro in León. This is a special burial place for kings and queens.
Her Children
Elvira and King Alfonso V had two children together:
- Bermudo III of León: He later became king. Sadly, he was killed in 1037 during the Battle of Tamarón. He fought against Count Ferdinand, who was married to Bermudo's sister, Sancha.
- Sancha of León: She became the Queen of León and married Ferdinand I.
