Elwin's Story
Elwin was started in 1859. It was built on land owned by two people: William Martin and Daniel H. Elwood. The community was planned after a railroad was finished nearby. The name "Elwin" is a mix of their last names. It combines "El" from Elwood and "win" from Martin.
Where is Elwin?
Elwin is in the middle part of Macon County, Illinois. Its exact location is 39°51′6″N 88°56′39″W / 39.85167°N 88.94417°W. It is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Decatur. Decatur is the main city in Macon County. Elwin was once known by the name South Wheatland.
A major road, U.S. Route 51, goes around the east side of Elwin. There is also an older part of the road. This older part, called U.S. Route 51 Business, goes right through the center of the community. These roads connect Elwin to other places. For example, they lead south to Pana.
Elwin covers about 0.83 square miles (2.16 square kilometers) of land. All of this area is land, with no water. The community is in the Spring Creek watershed. This means water from Elwin flows into Spring Creek. Spring Creek then flows north to the Sangamon River in Decatur.
