Ema datshi is a very famous dish from Bhutan. Many people even call it the national dish of Bhutan! It is made with spicy chili peppers and cheese. In the Dzongkha language, "ema" means "chili," and "datshi" means "cheese." So, the name tells you exactly what's in it!

What Kind of Chilies Are Used?

People use different kinds of chilies for Ema datshi. They can be green, red, or even white. White chilies are green ones that have been washed in hot water and dried in the sun. The chilies can be fresh or dried.

These chilies are a special type called "sha ema." They are similar to other well-known peppers like cayenne or poblano peppers.

How Is the Cheese Made?

The cheese in Ema datshi is usually made at home. It comes from the milk of cows or yaks. First, the fat is taken out of the milk to make butter. The part of the milk left over, which has no fat, is then used to make the cheese.

After the cheese is made, there is a watery liquid left behind. This liquid is not wasted! It is often used as a soup, which people can enjoy with rice. This way, every part of the milk is used.

Other Delicious Datshi Dishes

There are other dishes that are similar to Ema datshi. One popular one is called kewa datshi. For this dish, instead of using chilies, people use potatoes.

You can actually make many kinds of "datshi" by adding different vegetables or meats.

  • If you use beans instead of chilies, it's called bean (semchum) datshi.
  • If you use mushrooms, it's called mushroom (shamu) datshi.
  • Beef datshi is another well-known and tasty version.
