Embalse is a town located in the center-west of the Córdoba province in Argentina. It sits within the beautiful Calamuchita Valley. The town is about 119 kilometers (74 miles) southwest of Córdoba City.
In 2010, about 8,793 people lived in Embalse. However, during the busy tourist season, the population grows much larger. Many visitors come to enjoy the town and its famous lake.
What's in a Name?
The word embalse means "reservoir" or "artificial lake" in Spanish. This town is named after the large lake it sits beside. This lake was created by building a dam across the Río Tercero.
The dam was finished in 1930. It is 58 meters (190 feet) high and 125 meters (410 feet) long. The lake can hold a huge amount of water, up to 730 million cubic meters! The lake itself covers an area of 58 square kilometers (22 square miles).
The Big Lake's Uses
The large reservoir in Embalse is very important. It is used for many things:
- Fishing: People enjoy fishing in the lake.
- Irrigation: The water helps farmers grow crops in the area.
- Hydroelectricity: The dam uses the water to create electricity.
- Water Sports: It's a great place for fun water activities like boating and swimming.
On the southern side of the lake, you'll find the Embalse nuclear power plant. This is one of Argentina's two working nuclear power plants. It helps provide electricity for the country.

Embalse is a very popular place for tourists. It has many places for visitors to stay, including seven hotels and lots of smaller guesthouses. There's also a casino that opened in 1984, offering entertainment for adults. The beautiful lake and surrounding nature make it a perfect spot for a vacation.
