What is an Embassy?

An embassy is like a special office for one country in another country. It helps people from its home country who are visiting or living abroad. It also works to keep good relationships between the two countries. The person in charge of an embassy is called an ambassador.

The Syrian Embassy in London

The Syrian Embassy in London used to be the main place for Syria to connect with the United Kingdom. It was located in a well-known area of London called Belgravia.

Protests and Closure

After the start of the Syrian Civil War, the embassy saw several protests. People who did not agree with the Syrian government gathered outside the building in 2011 and 2012. There were also other protests, like one led by Anjem Choudary in 2013.

Because of the increasing problems in Syria, the British government decided to take action. In May 2012, they asked the Syrian ambassador to leave the country. Many other countries did the same thing. Since then, the Embassy of Syria in London has been closed. This means it no longer operates as Syria's official office in the UK.
