The Embassy of Turkey in London is like Turkey's main office in the United Kingdom. It's where Turkish diplomats work to keep good relationships between Turkey and the UK. They help Turkish citizens living or visiting the UK and also help people from the UK who want to visit Turkey.

There used to be an embassy from the Ottoman Empire (an older Turkish empire) in London, starting in 1793. This embassy closed in 1914 when World War I began. A new embassy for the modern Republic of Turkey opened in 1924.

What is an Embassy?

An embassy is a special building in a foreign country. It's where a country's official representatives work. Their main job is to help their home country and its citizens. They also work to build strong friendships and connections with the country they are in. This includes things like trade, culture, and politics.

History of the Turkish Embassy in London

From Ottoman Times to Today

The story of Turkey's embassy in London goes back a long way. The first one was opened by the Ottoman Empire in 1793. This was a time when empires were very powerful. However, this embassy closed down when World War I started in 1914.

After the war, the new country of Turkey was formed. It was called the Republic of Turkey. In 1924, this new republic opened its own embassy in London. This showed that Turkey was ready to build new relationships with other countries.

Where is the Embassy Located?

From 1901 to 1954, the Turkish Embassy was located at 69 Portland Place in London. After 1954, the embassy moved to its current home. This is a beautiful building at 38–48 Belgrave Square. The old building on Portland Place is still used today. It is now the official home for Turkey's Ambassador.

The embassy building on Belgrave Square is very special. It is a "Grade I listed building." This means it's a very important historical building in the UK. It has special protection to make sure it stays preserved.

What About the Consulate?

Besides the main embassy, Turkey also has a "Consulate" in London. It is located at Rutland Lodge, Rutland Gardens, in Knightsbridge. A consulate is similar to an embassy but often focuses more on helping citizens. For example, they might help with passports, visas, or other official documents.
